Do you want fries with that?

Slice of Life: Day 8

I have a new found respect for people whose job it is to take an order and enter it into the register.  Tonight was our McTeacher night at McDonald’s to benefit our school and PTO. I was hoping to be the friendly greeter and pass out balloons like last year or anything that didn’t require me to go behind the counter.  Well, all the greeter jobs were taken, which only left behind the counter!  And if that wasn’t bad enough then they said there was a register open!  Oh god.  My worst nightmare.  I don’t even enter in my order at restaurants that have a kiosk because I do not have the patience to look for the right button to select and then if I want to make a substitution or add something on don’t even get me started!
The register so colorful, pictures on the buttons… So.  Many.  Buttons.
“Cheeseburger, small fry, medium coke.”
Is that under lunch 1? Lunch 2? Does the size come first or the food item?
Again, so many buttons.
“Shamrock shake.”
Shamrock shake?! Where am I suppose to find that?
“Shamrock shake, but can you do half chocolate?”
“I am sure you can.”  Inside I am thinking, you have got to be kidding me! Does it look like I know how to order that?!
“Big Mac meal.”
A meal?  “Is there a number next to that?”
“Bacon cheese fries.”
Cheese fries?!  Since when do they have cheese fries?
I have tunnel vision focusing on the screen.  Everything else around me is a blur. 30 minutes could now have gone fast enough.
Thank you to the kind employees who helped me find the right button as I stood in awe as your fingers danced across the screen pressing, tapping, moving so fast I couldn’t even follow.
Next year, I will get there earlier.  Next year, I will be the friendly greeter.  I beg you, please let me be the friendly greeter!

  1. OMG this made me laugh because I never worked food or retail as a kid. I feared all the things you do. We haven’t had a McTeacher night in a long time and I am glad. I always gravitated towards selling the $1 chocolate chip cookies. It was an easy job I could manage.Who knew McDonalds had cheese fries!

  2. OMG! I can SO relate. I was the friendly greeter for our McTeacher Night- thank goodness! Just watching my colleagues on the register made me anxious. I HIGHLY recommend switching jobs next time. I enjoyed passing out stickers to little kids, taking selfies with my students, etc. But hey, good for you for going all in! You’re a rockstar! 🙂

  3. Mmmm….Shamrock Shake. It is a really cool experience to do the McTeacher Night. Every time we do it I think that those workers have to hate us. We are so slow and so needy, they probably just think we are in the way. It definitely makes me appreciate the jobs they really do, especially with how crabby some of the customers can be.

  4. Sounds like a lot of fun! We do a celebrity server night at a local restaurant, but it’s all kids who get to be the servers. They have a great time. I would actually kind of like to do some waitressing again – see if I can still do it! I have never thought about mixing Shamrock with chocolate!

  5. I´ḿ SO glad I got there early for my ¨shift¨! I got to sell cookies. Last year, I found myself at the drink machine in the drive thru. Simple enough, right? The automated machine fills the orders, all I had to do was put the lids on. Ummm… not when the root beer runs out, and there´s no employee to be found! Yeah, I found something else to do – like sell cookies!!! We still had a good time!
