Slice of Life Day 4
It is a gift when my husband texts me to say that he will pick up the kids on his way home! A feeling of calm instantly washes over me in that I don’t need to rush with the feeling of guilt that my kids have to stay longer than their friends. Instead, I can just go home to a quiet house. My dog usually gets pushed aside as I, the sherpa, come in balancing backpacks, snow bags, lunch boxes, and water bottles. It’s as if no one else is capable of bringing in these belongings! Instead, my dog gets her kisses and scratches and let out when I walk to the mailbox. She turns her head almost to say, “This isn’t what we usually do.” An added bonus is that the sun is shining and the air is crisp! These deep breaths can be savored and appreciated. Dinner is usually a hustle of emptying backpacks, lunchboxes, emptying and loading the dishwasher, while prepping dinner, but not before a snack is curated. Again, no one else is capable of finding and making food.
“I’m hungry!”
“I’m making dinner.”
“But, I’m hungry now!”
Ugh…
Instead, cocktail poured, music on, and my own snack before dinner prep! Because, I’m with them, I’m always hungry before dinner!
The gift of time, calm, enjoying the quiet before everyone busts through the door. I savor these moments and appreciate when I am gifted them.
How well I remember those hectic days. Although it’s been years since I was mothering my brood of five, the hustle-bustle of life is etched in my mind. In fact, my husband constantly reminds me to slow down, but multi-tasking and rushing around is a tough habit to break. Glad you could grab a few quiet minutes to yourself. It can make all the difference.

I feel ya! I am lucky because my wife works from home so she takes the brunt of this like you. I try to also get the kids every once in a while so she doesn’t have to. I do most of the cooking and dishes so she can have some time to finish her work. It’s stressful. Enjoy that cocktail!!
